Meet the Perioral Assessment Team

This site is led and medically reviewed by Tongchun Mao, MD, who is responsible for the medical content and for the assessment that separates the muscle, volume, sun and dryness contributors to perioral lines. The other three contribute what that assessment often needs: the resurfacing perspective with an honest account of downtime and pigment risk, the dermatologic diagnosis of a lip surface that is diseased rather than lined, and the surgical view of a mouth whose shape or bite has changed.

Tongchun Mao

Tongchun Mao (毛彤春)

Deputy Director & Head of Aesthetic Surgery · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending · Lead Physician of This Site

Aesthetic surgery · perioral ageing and lip border · what each contributor responds to

Dr. Tongchun Mao is an aesthetic surgeon at Chongqing West District Hospital, where he is Deputy Director and Head of Aesthetic Surgery in its Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center and the responsible physician for this site. He personally performs more than 700 operations a year, within hospital standards of assessment, anaesthesia and follow-up.

On this site his part is the assessment that separates the contributors to perioral lines: the muscle that rings the mouth, the volume lost from the lip and around it, the sun damage accumulated at the border, and dryness. They overlap constantly and they are not answered by the same thing, and a plan built for one when another is dominant is the commonest reason a patient concludes that lip treatment does not work. He is careful with the border specifically, because it moves more than almost anywhere else in the face and behaves differently for it.

Clinical focus

  • Assessment of perioral lines at rest and in movement, and what each finding means
  • Separating the muscle, volume and sun contributors on the same mouth
  • The lip border as a high-movement area, and what that changes about technique
  • When the honest answer is lip care and protection rather than an injection
  • Recognising the lip findings that belong with a physician rather than a cosmetic plan

The border is not the cheek

The lip border moves with every word, sip and expression, and the tissue there is thin with little padding beneath it. Material placed in a moving area behaves differently from material placed in a still one, and the result depends on technique and on experience rather than on volume alone. It is the area of the face where the difference between a good result and a disappointing one is smallest in millimetres.

Shaoliang Wang

Shaoliang Wang (王韶亮)

Director, Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center · Vice Chief Physician, Associate Professor, Doctor of Medicine

Center leadership · surgical standards and complex assessment

Dr. Shaoliang Wang is Director of the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team he provides the surgical perspective and the tertiary-hospital backstop — the assessment when an operation is the honest answer, and the hospital-level care for the rare complication that needs it.

Within this site his part is the standard the plan has to meet, the assessment of a mouth whose shape or bite has changed, and the backstop for anything on the lip or around it that needs a physician’s eye rather than a cosmetic one.

Clinical focus

  • Center leadership and multidisciplinary case review
  • Surgical assessment when an operation is the honest answer to descent or excess skin
  • Hospital-based care for the rare complication that needs theatre-level management
Ke He

Ke He (何锞)

Deputy Director & Head of Skin & Laser Aesthetics · Attending Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Skin and laser aesthetics · perioral resurfacing and pigment risk

Dr. Ke He is Deputy Director and head of skin and laser aesthetics within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team her role is the device and injectable assessment, and the honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle.

Within this site her part is the line that is set in the skin rather than produced by movement or lost volume: what resurfacing can soften over the perioral area, how much downtime it costs, and how much pigment risk a given skin tone carries.

Clinical focus

  • Device and injectable assessment before any treatment plan
  • Staged planning judged against standardised photographs
  • Honest referral when a problem needs an operation rather than a needle
Yongbo Jia

Yongbo Jia (贾勇波)

Deputy Director & Head of Dermatology · Vice Chief Physician, Licensed Aesthetic Attending

Dermatology · lip surface disease and lesions

Dr. Yongbo Jia is a dermatologist within the Plastic Surgery & Aesthetics Medical Center at Chongqing West District Hospital. Within the team his role is medical skin assessment — diagnosing and managing pigment and barrier conditions, and treating skin that a device or an injection has irritated.

Within this site his part is the lip that is not simply lined: the sore that will not heal, the recurring blister, the cracked and inflamed corners, and the dry or peeling surface — the conditions that must be diagnosed before anything is injected anywhere near them.

Clinical focus

  • Medical skin assessment behind injectable treatment plans
  • Diagnosis and management of pigment and barrier conditions
  • Dermatologic care of skin after irritation or a delayed reaction

Start with an assessment, not a package

Arrange a consultation. We will establish which contributor produced the lines, explain what treatment can and cannot change for your mouth, and set out the options including doing nothing.
